Almost half of young people aged between 18 and 24 in the UK, don’t consider themselves exclusively straight or gay, according to a recent YouGov survey. Instead, they identify with a more “open-minded approach” to sexuality.
On the Kinsey scale 0 represents exclusively heterosexual, 3 equally heterosexual and homosexual, and 6 represents exclusively homosexual. When asked where they see themselves in this range, 49% of the 1,632 respondents chose neither 0 or 6, but somewhere in between, demonstrating much more fluid ways to identify sexuality.
It’s not just younger generations either: people of all ages now accept the idea that “sexual orientation exists along a continuum rather than a binary choice”. The results showed that 60% of heterosexuals and 73% of homosexuals rejected the notion that sexuality is something that is fixed, with 28% of heterosexuals agreeing that “there is no middle ground – you are either heterosexual or you are not”.
