A senior official of the organizing committee of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games expressed his pessimistic view Thursday on introducing daylight saving time for the Games. Submitting a draft law for the system's adoption during the extraordinary Diet session will likely be shelved.
Toshiaki Endo, a vice president of the committee and former minister in charge of the Games, said to reporters, "It seems difficult to introduce it by 2020 due to adjusting computer systems and the response from the general public."
Prior to his remarks, members of the Diet connected to the issue from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party had an initial meeting of a study group to discuss the matter at party headquarters. At the meeting, opposing views were raised one after another such as, "it will require a lot of work to adjust systems," while others expressed positive opinions, citing it will contribute to saving energy.
