'Not really happy' Swansea City star reveals frustration as he drops Sunderland hint

Joel Asoro has voiced his frustrations over his lack of opportunities at Swansea City last season.

The 20-year-old joined FC Groningen on a season-long loan deal before the season started after finding game-time limited under Graham Potter last term.

Asoro signed for Swansea from Sunderland in a £2million deal last year, making an impact over the course of pre-season. He featured in Potter's opening six games but his form and confidence dipped considerably, with injury also hampering his progression.

With new boss Steve Cooper blessed with wing options, it was decided that the Sweden international would be loaned out for the 2019-20 campaign.

In an interview with Fox Sports in the Netherlands, Asoro hinted that he may have made the wrong decision to join Swansea.

He said: "Last season I didn’t really play much. I’m not really happy about it, but it is what it is.

“Sometimes it’s the right step, sometimes maybe not. But you learn from it.

“I wanted to play and get more football.

“I knew the coach [at Groningen] already so I knew the way they wanted to play, like direct football and stuff like that. I wanted to be a part of that.”

He has yet to feature for his new club, being named on the bench for the Eredivisie side so far.

Named as one of the Guardian's 60 best young talents in 2016, Asoro moved from his homeland to the north east at the age of 15, something he admits was difficult for him.

"I moved when I was 15, which is quite young," he said.

“It was a good opportunity for me to get some good football.

“It was hard, but I had my mum with me which made it a bit easier to get into it.

"[My debut] It was fantastic - I will never forget that day. I was so happy.

“I haven’t got words to describe it, when I remember it I just keep smiling.”

Asoro is contracted to Swansea until the summer of 2022.
