Not having ticket won't mean missing Olympic action

Even those who can't get tickets for the 2020 Tokyo Games events will have chances to soak up some Olympic and Paralympic spirit by heading over to the new Tokyo Waterfront City area, which will be home to seven Games venues and outdoor warm-up areas.

The Tokyo Waterfront City concept, unveiled Friday by the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, envisages creating a buzzing festival environment throughout the Games.

In an Olympics first, the plan will allow visitors -- with or without tickets -- to watch Olympic athletes while they get into condition at warm-up spaces in the area. Visitors will also be able to experience some sports activities on the same field of play.

The Tokyo Waterfront City area covers about 400 hectares and extends over Koto, Minato and Shinagawa wards. The centerpiece will be a two-kilometer-long "Olympic Promenade," where the Olympic and Paralympic cauldron will be located on the Yume no Ohashi bridge, surrounded by seven Olympic venues for events popular with young people, such as 3x3 basketball, BMX cycling and skateboarding.

Nearby at the Ariake Urban Sports Park, where BMX freestyle and other events will be held, the committee plans to stage exhibitions with athletes and offer opportunities for ticket holders to experience these sports first-hand.

On the west end of the promenade, visitors without tickets will have opportunities to watch 3x3 basketball players and other athletes while they warm up at the Aomi Urban Sports Park, a venue for 3x3 basketball and sport climbing.

The committee aims to attract more visitors by exhibiting sports and arts on the promenade.
