'Not good enough' - Erik ten Hag urged to make Manchester United transfer call on striker

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha insists Wout Weghorst should not be signed permanently at the end of this season.

Weghorst, 30, has fallen out of favour under Erik ten Hag as of late after previously starting 20 straight matches since signing on loan during the January transfer window. The centre-forward has instead featured as a substitute in United's last two games.

Despite Marcus Rashford suffering an injury, Anthony Martial started at Old Trafford in midweek on the back of scoring as a substitute against Everton, while Weghorst was left on the bench. It is his much-maligned lack of goals that has failed to impress Saha, who scored 42 times in 124 matches for United.

"In terms of numbers, it’s clear that Wout Weghorst needs to score more goals because that is what a club like Manchester United need," he told PaddyPower, via the Metro. "When the ball is coming through from Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford or Antony, you need a striker who can score 15-20 goals a season.

"However, it’s not good enough that he’s scored twice in 20 games, and I don’t see that changing before the end of the season. In terms of his mentality, he works hard, but that is not good enough.

"For me, he hasn’t done enough to show people that he deserves his spot in the team beyond the summer. The manager has a better idea as he sees him in training every day, but for me, Wout is not the answer."
