'Not going to comment' - Jose Mourinho admits 'laughing' at James Rodriguez and Everton decision

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has explained why he ‘laughed’ when Everton were awarded a penalty.

Referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot after Sergio Reguilon collided with James Rodriguez, with Gylfi Sigurdsson dispatching the resulting penalty.

The goal from the Iceland international would be one of his strikes in the 2-2 draw with Spurs at Goodison Park, as the Toffees lose further ground in the race for a top four finish.

A single point leaves Carlo Ancelotti’s side in eighth place and six points behind fourth-placed West Ham and three adrift of Liverpool in sixth.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle, Mourinho was asked what he thought about the penalty decision, and responded with a smirk.

“I’m not going to comment,” said Mourinho, when asked for his thoughts on Oliver’s decision to award a penalty.

“So many years and so many experiences, in this moment I just laugh or give a kind of silly smile, and I’m not going to comment.”

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp argued at half time why the Spurs players did not complain about the decision to give Everton a penalty, but Mourinho did not think it would have made a difference.

“That’s the way my team normally is, we are not a team of many complaints,” said Mourinho.

“Am I okay that they didn’t complain? The job is done, the referee has made the decision.

“I’ve learned this season it is very difficult for VAR to make a decision to go against the referee’s decision.

“It was the same referee against Arsenal, we complained about the penalty and it meant nothing because the penalty is still there.

“Probably the players felt the same as I felt when the referee decided to give the penalty.”
