'Not fair or respectful' - Steven Gerrard responds to Philippe Coutinho transfer question at Aston Villa

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has praised his former teammate Philippe Coutinho, amid reports linking the Brazilian with a move to Aston Villa.

The pair were at Liverpool together for two-and-a-half years and it has been reported that Gerrard is looking for a reunion with Coutinho.

Since moving to Barcelona in 2018 for £142m, the 29-year-old has struggled to recapture the quality he showcased for the Reds, but Coutinho has now been touted to return to the Premier League.

Speaking ahead of Villa’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United, though, Gerrard refused to get drawn on the progress over a potential loan deal for the playmaker.

“I’m never going to mention players' names or individuals that are signed and belong to other teams and other clubs because I wouldn't like that disrespect coming this way in terms of Aston Villa,” the former Liverpool captain said .

"I appreciate and respect the speculation, we are at that time of the season where a lot of names get bandied around but, unfortunately, you won't see me comment on any speculation."

Gerrard continued: “That's not fair or respectful. But I do appreciate that his name is out there and he's linked to Aston Villa.

“But he's also linked to five or six other clubs in this league and I'm sure there will be a long list of foreign clubs who are linked with Philippe's services as well because you're talking about a world-class individual player.

"I understand and respect it but I can't give anything further than that."

A talisman for Liverpool, particularly in the early years of Jurgen Klopp’s reign, Coutinho developed into one of the finest footballers in the world during his six-year stint on Merseyside.

However, Barcelona coach Xavi has admitted that the club need to prioritise player sales this month in order to register the club’s new signings, leaving Coutinho seemingly set for new horizons.

Despite refusing to discuss the status of a possible transfer, Gerrard did indulge in praising Coutinho’s ability and character while at Liverpool.

"Listen, he's a wonderful footballer," the Villa boss said. "To share a dressing room and a pitch with Coutinho was an absolute pleasure because he was on a level that very few footballers are on.

"His imagination, creation and, also, some of the highlight reels are incredible for all to see.

“I think the name speaks for itself but what I won't do here, or at any other press conference, is speak about players who belong to other clubs.”
