"Not fair" Darren Bent issues promotion verdict on Leeds United amid season cancellation fears

Former England striker Darren Bent has insisted that Leeds United must be promoted to the Premier League if the Championship is suspended.

The EFL has postponed all action until April 3, sparking wide debate as to whether the season will get cancelled.

With the Whites potentially less than nine games away from a return to the Premier League, sitting top of the division with a seven-point lead over Fulham, supporters are concerned their promotion hopes will go up in smoke.

There have also been suggestions that the league tables could be frozen, rather than cancelling the leagues, another proposal that has its flaws.

With Football's governing bodies entering uncharted territory, Bent has insisted that whatever the decision made, it would be unfair on Leeds to deny them promotion to the Premier League.

Speaking to  Football Insider , he said: “If the league gets suspended and the Premier League go and hand the title to Liverpool, then what happens to the teams at the bottom of the table?

“Do they just get a reprieve and don’t get relegated? The teams that are meant to come up like Leeds, do they not get a chance?

“You can’t just all of a sudden hand teams the title – if you do then you might as well say that the teams that are in the bottom three now get relegated. It’s really not fair on Liverpool, Leeds and others.

“We’re in really tricky waters.”
