'Not even remotely close': Charlize Theron reveals people have been pronouncing her name incorrectly

Charlize Theron has revealed that most people have been pronouncing her name wrong this whole time.

During an appearance on The One Show on Tuesday night (30 June), the South Africa-born actor was asked whether her name is Afrikaans, and how to pronounce it correctly.

When presenter Gethin Jones pointed out that many fans pronounce her surname with the emphasis on the “ther” or the “on”, Theron laughed and said: “The truth of the matter is those are not even remotely close to the real pronunciation.”

Theron then revealed her surname is in fact pronounced “Throne”, with a slight roll of the “r”. She also said the name originates in France.

The Oscar-winner was on the show to discuss her new film, The Old Guard, in which she plays a centuries-old warrior.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the action thriller is adapted from the graphic novel series of the same name by Greg Rucka.

It also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthias Schoenaerts and If Beale Street Could Talk’s KiKi Layne.
