'Not clever': Man sat in police car after burglary arrest then tries to nick officer's wallet

A man under arrest for burglary then tried to steal an officer's wallet while he was sat in the back of a police car.

The thief was initially arrested on Saturday night (February 15) after police were called to reports of a burglary on St James Road, in Orrell, Wigan.

The male had been detained by the occupant of the house after he had attempted to steal a vehicle from the driveway, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of burglary of a dwelling and placed in the back of a police car.

But minutes later, the man reached over to the front of the car and tried to steal an officer's wallet.

He had removed its contents before police spotted what he had done.

The man was then arrested again on suspicion of theft.

He has since been charged with burglary, fraud, aggravated vehicle taking and theft and has been remanded into custody.

Posting on the GMP Wigan West Facebook page, police said the man was 'not clever'.

The post said: "At 22:45hrs on Saturday 15th Feb C relief officers responded to reports of a male detained by the occupant of a property on St James Road, Orrell, having attempted to steal his motor vehicle from the driveway.

"The suspect was arrested for burglary to dwelling.

"His crime spree was not over however as after being placed into the rear of the police car he thought it a good idea to steal an officers wallet and remove the contents therein having reached into the front, not clever and further arrested for theft.

"The male has now been charged with burglary, fraud, aggravated vehicle taking, theft and remanded in custody."
