'Not bad for a centre-back' - Why Garth Crooks was left impressed by Newcastle's Fabian Schar

Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Watford on Saturday is unlikely to live long in the memory but one United player did manage to catch the eye in a game otherwise devoid of quality.

With the Magpies trailing 1-0 to Will Hughes' first minute strike, it was Swiss international defender Fabian Schar who stepped up to bring Steve Bruce's side level.

It was Schar's fifth Premier League goal of 2019 which, frighteningly, is more than any other Newcastle player during that time - a statistic albeit skewed by the departures of last season's top scorers Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez.

Nonetheless, his impressive start to life at Newcastle has shown no signs of stopping this term and he was named in Garth Crooks' Premier League Team of the Week.

"This was a very different test to the one facing Newcastle last week against Spurs," Crooks told BBC Sport.

"I posed the question 'could the Magpies attack with the same conviction as they defended at White Hart Lane?'

"Well the performance wasn't quite as convincing but good enough to contain a Watford side desperate for points.

"Schar played a major part in this controlled professional performance by Newcastle. They didn't panic when they went 1-0 down and he took his goal with great composure. Not bad for a centre-back."
