'Not acceptable' - Oleksandr Zinchenko makes frank apology after mistake in Southampton defeat

Oleksandr Zinchenko has apologised for his mistake that saw Manchester City lose to Southampton on Sunday evening.

Man City made the trip to the St Mary's Stadium hoping to build off that emphatic win over champions Liverpool.

But they left the South coast empty-handed following Che Adams' winner in the 16th minute, the former Birmingham City striker's first goal for the Saints.

The finish was quite something, a long-range effort that caught Ederson way off his line.

But it came about following a mistake from Zinchenko, who gave the ball away in a precarious position.

And the Ukrainian has now apologised for the error on social media.

"Do apologize to all team and City fans.," he wrote on Instagram. "This kind of mistakes is not acceptable."

The 23-year-old defender was making his 15th Premier League appearance for City and only his second league start since the restart.

The defeat leaves Man City 23 points off Liverpool and eight ahead of third-placed Leicester City.

Pep Guardiola's men are next in action against Newcastle United on Wednesday (6pm) at the Etihad Stadium.
