A person recently gave their Airbnb a low rating, much to the amusement of their TikTok audience. The reason? They found multiple locks of human hair taped to the wall underneath a pair of blue curtains.
In a video with more than 1.1 million views, TikTok user @jadenicole10 shared the unsettling discovery: four separate locks of human hair, each distinct from the others. In the description, she wrote, “Past victims???” The post quickly gained traction as viewers debated how and why the hair ended up there.
So, what’s up with the human hair? How did it get there? Why is it there?
From Airbnb to Hairbnb
The sight was bizarre enough to leave the guests unsettled, but commenters couldn’t resist joking about it. One wrote, “I’d add a lock of my own hair. Confuse whatever serial killer is keeping trophies.” Another chimed in with a quick pun: “Hairbnb.”
It’s possible that the strands were left behind as a prank by a previous guest. Because the hair was taped above a window and hidden beneath two curtains, the property’s host or cleaning staff could have easily missed it. That would mean it remained there for the next unsuspecting guest to stumble upon. It’s also possible that the hair has been there for longer than just one guest’s stay. After all, it depends on how often the host actually moves the curtains to look out the window.
A reasonable explanation, or something more dangerous?
The mystery deepened in the comments section, where users spun theories that ranged from creepy to comical.
“Why do I feel like the owners haven’t noticed and guests have just been carrying on the tradition lol,” one viewer wrote, suggesting a sort of accidental ritual had developed at the rental. Another commented, “Nothing wrong with a little hair museum,” leaning into the absurdity of the situation.
Whether prank, oversight, or something stranger, the incident highlights one of the risks of booking short-term rentals: you never really know what you’re going to find. Previous Airbnb guests have found all sorts of things while staying. In one instance, a guest found a supposed hidden camera in a picture frame and had her entire trip refunded by the company. Another report from KXII found a hidden camera inside a smoke detector. At the very least, hair can’t watch you while you sleep.
For @jadenicole10, the discovery was more than enough to warrant a poor review. Or at least, joking about a poor review. The origin of the hair remains a question mark, but the internet consensus is clear: sometimes, the weirdest stories come from a chance encounter while trying to look out a window.
Airbnb responds
In an email to the Mary Sue, a spokesperson for Airbnb said it was unclear whether this was a legitimate rental on its platform.
“We have no way of confirming that this is a legitimate Airbnb stay,” they wrote. “We reached out to the video creator via DM 6 days ago but have not received a response. If an Airbnb guest is concerned about their stay, they should reach out to global Community Support team who is available 24/7.”

Update Sep. 2, 2025:
In a comment to the Mary Sue, @Jadenicole10 clarified that they were staying in Kelowna, British Columbia, in mid-August. She added, “The stay was pretty normal otherwise. But the host later rated us badly [because] we requested money from Airbnb. It made us uncomfortable [because] we were [five] women who arrived late at night. The host was notified [that] we were unhappy with the presence of the hair before he rated us, so he rated us poorly and Airbnb refused to take it down.”
