Nostalgic photos give fascinating look at London Road in 1975

1975: Wright's Traders' Supplies, 43 London Road (Picture: Brue Rae, London College of Communication, 1975. Collection: UAL Archives and Special Collections Centre)

This nostalgic set of black and white photos gives a fascinating insight into Elephant and Castle’s London Road in 1975.

The recently-discovered images are set to be displayed at the London College of Communication, showing a range of quaint homes and shops.

There were no chain stores on the stretch in 1975 and instead the units were occupied by pubs, bookshops and newsagents, to name a few of the institutions there.

Photographer Bruce Rae documented the people behind the businesses of London, photographing owners, workers and families outside their shop fronts.

The pictures from the 1970s will be exhibited beside others from 1904 and 2019, showing the changes through the different eras, in a show called Portrait of a London Road.

Gill Henderson, cultural and communities partnerships manager at London College of Communication, said: “This exhibition is a fabulous opportunity for both people from Southwark and from across London to get a rare glimpse into the history of this very special part of London.”

The exhibition will be open from November 4 to January 15 on Mondays to Wednesdays, click here for more details.
