Nostalgic images capture how Belfast public enjoyed sunny days in the past

We've thankfully had a few sunny spells in Belfast recently, with temperatures soaring just as we're making our way out of lockdown.

As the public enjoys the good weather, we've put together which shows how Belfast basking in the balmy weather of years past.

These nostalgic photos capture Belfast from decades past - with ice cream being the must-have for the city's residents on a hot day.

Mr Whippy (pictured above) doling out ‘pokes’ to the crowds of kids proves that the popularity of the iconic vans and jingles haven’t diminished over the decades.

And then there’s the cycle version with the ice-cream man who was always on hand during hot days until the 1950s.

Positioning his bike outside the entrance to Botanic Gardens – at the old gate lodge at Stranmillis – he sold ‘bricks’ or 'sliders' and ‘North Poles’ at 2d a pop.

There’s also some fascinating images of Belfast folk “enjoying” the gardens from over 100 years ago, though their outfits must have made the heat unbearable.

Ladies in formal, long dresses tried to keep their cool with parasols while the gentlemen wore full suits with bowler hats.

Fast forward a good few decades and the images of Belfast City Hall and Botanic Avenue in the sun show changing fashions much better adapted to the heat.

In the 60s floaty, floral dresses were the summer style.

And by the 80s, we see how shirts were ditched altogether as a group of blokes stride down past The Empire bar watched by girls in denim shorts and crop tops.

And let's hope the good weather continues long into the summer!
