Norwood's Mitch Grigg wins Magarey Medal

Former Adelaide Crow Mitch Grigg has polled 23 votes in the South Australian National Football League [SANFL] count to win his first Magarey Medal.

The 24-year-old Norwood midfielder finished four votes ahead of Port Adelaide's Brendon Ah Chee with Sturt's James Battersby polling 16 votes at Tuesday night's event at Adelaide Oval.

Another Norwood player, Matt Panos, Travis Schiller from Central District and West Adelaide's Kaine Stevens all polled 14 votes with another of the favourites, Nick Holman, on 13.

Last season's winner, Sturt's Zane Kirkwood, received 12 votes, as did Port Adelaide's Aaron Young and South Adelaide's Nick Liddle.

Grigg returned to Norwood this season after being delisted by the Adelaide Crows.

The SANFL premiership player was drafted from the Redlegs and played 20 games for the Crows after making his AFL debut in 2013.

"Obviously a magnificent honour for me, certainly did not expect this," Grigg said.

"I'd like to thank my family, my mum and dad for their countless hours spent taking me to footy and training."

SA Football Hall of Fame

South Adelaide's former captain Stuart Palmer, Sydney's Michael O'Loughlin, North Adelaide and Sturt's Damian Squire and former SANFL administrator John Condon were inducted into the league's Hall of Fame.

The Magarey Medal has been awarded nearly every year of the SANFL competition since 1898 and is named in honour of the league's first chairman, William Ashley Magarey.

Field umpires award points to the three best performing players of each match throughout the season.

Port Adelaide's Louis Sharrad won the reserves Magarey Medal.

This Sunday, the Eagles play Sturt in the SANFL preliminary final at Adelaide Oval.

The winner will take on Port Adelaide in the grand final on September 24.
