Norwich postpone two fixtures in response to positive Covid-19 tests ahead of Newcastle clash

Norwich City have postponed two pre-season fixtures in response to a 'small number' of positive Covid-19 tests ahead of their clash with Newcastle United.

The Magpies are due to host Daniel Farke's side on Saturday, August 9, in their final non-competitive encounter before the start of the new Premier League season.

It will be United's first fixture at St James' Park since the lifting of all social distancing restrictions, and comes the weekend before they kick off their campaign against West Ham.

Norwich were due to take on Coventry City in a behind closed-doors friendly at Chesterfield's Technique Stadium on Wednesday night.

However, the Canaries confirmed in a statement earlier that day that the match had been cancelled as a 'precautionary measure' with positive Covid-19 test results recorded in the first-team group.

Farke's side were due to travel to recently relegated Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon, but an updated statement issued on Thursday confirmed this fixture has also been cancelled.

Norwich has confirmed players and staff continue to follow Premier League protocols and Government guidelines by working within their first-team bubble.

The Canaries are due to host Gillingham in their penultimate pre-season fixture on Tuesday night before travelling to Tyneside next weekend.
