Norwich injury news and predicted XI to face Manchester United

Dean Smith must shake off his first defeat at Norwich City manager as he welcomes Manchester United to Carrow Road.

A resounding 3-0 loss at Tottenham followed a promising start to life with the Canaries for Smith, who had taken five points from his first three games.

It will be Smith's second meeting with the Reds this season having led Aston Villa to victory at Old Trafford in September when still in charge at Villa Park.

For Ralf Rangnick, it will be his first away trip as he continues to settle into his interim role, having overseen one win and one draw in his first two weeks in temporary charge.

Smith has a few selection headaches ahead of the game, with the club facing a nervous wait for the results of the PCR tests after complaints of illness within the ranks.

Smith said, as quoted by Norfolk Live: “We have got a couple of players who have picked up knocks and we have got a couple of Covid-19 related issues we are waiting on results for.

“I can’t give you any names obviously but there are three or four players at the moment that we are waiting on.

“There were a couple of players we were worried about so they have been tested and we are waiting for the PCR test results back.

“They have been feeling a little bit unwell, not likely to be linked to the game at Tottenham Hotspur last week. Our first round of testing was all clear.”

Although no names have been disclosed, they will be without five players for United's visit.

Brandon Williams is ineligible to face his parent club, and will also be without Milot Rashica, Mathias Normann and Cristoph Zimmerman who have groin, pelvic and ankle injuries respectively with the latter recovering from surgery.

Sam Byram, on the other hand, is lacking match fitness and is unlikely to play any part.

With the enforced changes, it can only be assumed that he sticks to the system that didn't quite pay off against Antonio Conte's side but did offer opportunities.

Rangnick's control approach may force an unchanged system and Smith isn't shy of using five-man midfield or defence, he used the former in Villa's win at Old Trafford, earlier this season.

Players out: Brandon Williams (ineligible), Milot Rashica (groin), Mathias Normann (pelvic), Cristoph Zimmerman (ankle), Byram (lack of match fitness).

Norwich predicted XI: Krul; Aarons, Omobamidele, Hanley, Gibson, Giannoulis; Lees-Melou, Gilmour, McLean, Sargent, Pukki.
