Norwich boss Dean Smith asked about Newcastle United transfer links to Todd Cantwell

Dean Smith insists he knows nothing about Newcastle United's reported interest in Todd Cantwell.

The Norwich City playmaker is one of a host of names recently linked with a January switch to St James' Park.

Kieran Trippier was confirmed on Friday morning as the first signing of the new era on Tyneside, and Eddie Howe is confident the club will be able to make further additions this month.

Cantwell has played just five Premier League games so far this season, with the likes of Aston Villa, Leeds United and Liverpool also linked with the 23-year-old.

The former England under-21 international is out of contract this summer, although the Canaries hold the option to extend the deal by a further year.

Reports indicate Norwich could be willing to do business in January with a fee in the region of £15m, but Smith is adamant his focus is on helping Cantwell return to full fitness and his best form.

He told Norfolk Live: “I know there is an awful lot of speculation about Todd at the moment and there always is with good players.

“He’s been in a situation where when we arrived he hadn’t been training with the first-team for a while.

“We’ve had to build up his fitness and he is in a good place now so he is in contention to play on Sunday [in the FA Cup third round against Charlton Athletic].

“I don’t deal with the speculation, Stuart [Webber] does, so I don’t know is the honest answer.

“Hopefully he will be here still and playing well because that’s what we want from him, we know what he can do at this level. We’re working hard with him to get him back to that level.”
