Norwich 1-2 Manchester United: Harry Maguire nets late exta-time winner to seal FA Cup semi-final berth

Harry Maguire struck a 118th-minute winner to hand Manchester United a 2-1 extra-time victory over 10-man Norwich City to advance to the FA Cup semi-finals.

The England centre-back popped up with a last-gasp effort after Norwich - reduced to 10 men when Timm Klose was dismissed late in normal time - had cancelled out Odion Ighalo's opener courtesy of a brilliant strike from Todd Cantwell.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made eight changes to the side that beat Sheffield United 3-0 at Old Trafford, with only Maguire, Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes retaining their place in the lineup.

Odion Ighalo was handed his first start since the resumption of the season, with Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba both rested.

After settling into the game, United dominated possession and Norwich kept a deep defensive shape, with manager Daniel Farke barking instructions from the touchline.

The visitors' had their best early chance when Maguire's header was caught by Tim Krul, but that is as close as United got in the first 20 minutes or so.

After the drinks break, Norwich began to find some rhythm going forward and United were caught out at the back as Cantwell and Teemu Pukki were left with only Eric Bailly to beat, but the former's pass to the Finn was too heavy.

The best chance of the half arrived for the hosts when Cantwell's cross found Lukas Rupp and his goal-bound effort was charged down by the indomitable Maguire.

If United were going to score, then Fernandes was surely going to be involved. And the Portuguese intelligently found Luke Shaw on the left, with the defender's cross eventually making its way to Ighalo and the Nigerian improvising to finish past Krul.

That goal seemed to spark some life into Norwich and Solskjaer reacted with a triple change, sending on Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams.

But even with their regulars on the pitch, United lost control and Norwich pressed for an equaliser.

Emi Buendia whipped in a free-kick and Klose's header looked to be heading in until Ben Godfrey, his team-mate, somehow blocked and accidentally cleared it away from goal.

But six minutes later, Buendia set up Cantwell some 20 yards out and the midfielder struck powerfully into the bottom corner.

Questions could perhaps be asked about Sergio Romero's positioning, but Norwich di not mind at all. Solskjaer reacted by throwing on Pogba and Nemanja Matic, but if anything Norwich looked more likely to find the winner as Buendia fizzed an effort past the post.

With two minutes left, United put together a slick passing move with Fernandes' clever back-heel reaching Ighalo and the striker - through on goal - then pulled down by Klose.

Referee Jon Moss had no option but to produce a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, but Norwich hung on until the end of 90 minutes.

Solskjaer threw on Anthony Martial for Bailly as the Red Devils went all-out attack but could not break down a resilient Norwich defence.

With so many attacking players on the pitch, United struggled to find space but in the second half of extra-time, they nearly found the winner. Fernandes' cross was met by Maguire and his header look destined for the net, only for Krul to pull off a stunning save.

United - and Maguire for that matter - would not be denied for much longer, however.

Pogba's searching ball picked out Ighalo and his lay-off, albeit via a deflection, found its way to Maguire, who poked home with two minutes remaining.

Heartbreak for Norwich, but United's character shone through when they needed it. Wembley now beckons for Solskjaer's men.
