Norwegian Air starts Covid comeback with major 2022 expansion on UK routes

A low-cost airline has announced a major expansion programme with flights from four UK airports.

Norwegian Air is set to increase services from London Gatwick, Edinburgh, Manchester and Dublin to various Scandinavia destinations as part of its fightback from the Covid-19 pandemic.

It operates a short haul network across the Nordics and key European destinations at budget fares.

The carrier's new summer 2022 schedule features 59 routes from Scandinavia as a result of travel restrictions and quarantine requirements easing and demand for flights increasing.

London Gatwick will be served with 115 services from Oslo, Stavanger, Trondheim, Bergen, Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen.

Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen and Stockholm will have a total of eight weekly flights to Manchester with 15 services to Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen from Edinburgh.

Four weekly flights will operate from Dublin to Oslo and Copenhagen.

Norwegian Air, which ended long-haul services from Gatwick and Birmingham, expects that the ever-increasing vaccination rate will mean that the risk of new travel restrictions will be significantly lower in 2022.

Chief executive Geir Karlsen said: “We are pleased to be able to present our flying schedule for the next summer season.

“With this summer schedule we will continue to deliver on our strategy of investing in Norway and the Nordic region. In recent months, we have noticed an increased demand from customers, and we look forward to welcoming them on board to their favourite Nordic destinations.

“Norwegian is now well equipped to look ahead to 2022, although we will continue to some extent to be affected by the pandemic as the industry begins to recover.

“We have considerable flexibility in the use of our aircraft, and after the restructuring we have lower debt, an adapted fleet and organisation, and we have received new capital. It has been a tough time, but the result is that we are stronger now than before the pandemic.”
