Norwegian Air ends routes between Ireland and the US

Norwegian Air has discontinued flights from Ireland to the US.

The airline said that the move will affect "several thousand customers".

The routes had begun operating from Dublin, Cork and Shannon in July 2017 but Norwegian will now stop carrying passengers from these locations to North America on September 15, 2019.

In September 2018, the airline pulled flights from Belfast International Airport to New York and Boston.

The airline has been one of those badly affected by the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, which was involved in two fatal crashes, one off Jakarta in Indonesia in 2018 and the other in Addis Ababa earlier this year.

Matthew Wood, SVP Long-Haul Commercial at Norwegian, said: "Since March, we have tirelessly sought to minimise the impact on our customers by hiring replacement aircraft to operate services between Ireland and North America.

"However, as the return to service date for the 737 MAX remains uncertain, this solution is unsustainable."

He added: “We have concluded that these routes are no longer commercially viable.”
