Norway's King Harald V Hospitalized In Malaysia

Residents walk out from the Sultanah Maliha Hospital, where King Harald V of Norway is believed to be admitted with an infection, on the Malaysian resort island of Langkawi, Malaysia, Wednesday, Feb.

King Harald V of Norway, Europe's oldest monarch at 87 years old, is currently hospitalized in Malaysia after falling ill during his vacation on the northern resort island of Langkawi. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, reassured the public that his father is improving and in good spirits, but requires rest.

Reports from the Malaysian national news agency Bernama indicate that King Harald is receiving treatment at the Sultanah Maliha Hospital in Langkawi, where he is staying in the hospital's Royal Suite. The hospital has not provided any official comments on his condition, and the Malaysian health ministry has advised the media to await a potential statement.

This recent hospitalization follows a history of health issues for the monarch, including previous bouts of infection and respiratory illness. Despite these challenges, King Harald has expressed no intention to abdicate the throne, unlike his second cousin Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

Crown Prince Haakon has been fulfilling his father's duties during his periods of illness, as per protocol. The royal palace in Oslo has confirmed that there are no changes to the scheduled official engagements of the Crown Prince and Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

King Harald's next official duty is set for March 8, when he and Crown Prince Haakon are expected to preside over the state council meeting in Oslo. This meeting involves the sanctioning of new legislation by the monarch and the prime minister.

Despite his health challenges, King Harald remains committed to his role, reaffirming his dedication to his duties as monarch. The Norwegian public continues to monitor his progress and wishes for his swift recovery.
