Northwich train station reopens two days after building collapsed onto platform

Northwich Station has reopened almost two days after part of a building collapsed and fell through a platform canopy causing debris to rain down.

Northern confirmed on Thursday that services are able to stop at the station, which has been closed since Tuesday when the gable of a building fell through the canopy and onto the platform, CheshireLive reports.

The incident led to widespread travel disruption on the network.

Thankfully, nobody was injured as a result of the collapse and an investigation is being carried out by Network Rail.

Northern said on social media: "Disruption caused by an obstruction on the track at Northwich has now ended. Services are no longer affected by this problem."

The collapse happened between 10am and 10.30am on Tuesday with images showing a pile of debris on the platform as well as the broken canopy.

Hollie Sephton, who was at the station at the time, said: "I walked up, and the roof just fell on its own, that’s literally all that happened. It was complete silence one minute, and then all of a sudden it just fell.

"Everyone jumped into action though and everyone was fine. The fire brigade were rung within a minute."

The collapse has led to calls from politicians for the government to invest in the area's infrastructure, including from Northwich town mayor Cllr Sam Naylor and Cheshire MPs Mike Amesbury and Charlotte Nichols.

A spokesperson for the Department for Transport said: "We are supporting Network Rail as they continue to investigate the incident at Northwich Station.”

Asked about the calls for more funding for the area, the spokesperson pointed out that the government has spent more than £650 million on Northern Trains since March 2020.
