Northwestern women's basketball player Jordan Hankins found dead

Northwestern women's basketball player Jordan Hankins was found dead in her room on campus Monday afternoon, the school said. The sophomore from Indianapolis was 19.

Evanston, Ill., police are investigating, but the school said in a statement there was no evidence of foul play. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death.

The Wildcats' game Wednesday at Minnesota has been canceled.

"We are heartbroken and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jordan Hankins," Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips said in a statement. "Our love and thoughts are with her family, teammates and friends. ... Our department is solely focused on supporting those who adored her."

Northwestern coach Joe McKeown called Hankins "remarkably dynamic."

"This is a devastating loss for our basketball family," he said. "She brought an unwavering intensity and commitment to everything in her life. We will miss her enormously."

The Wildcats had returned to Evanston, Ill., after playing at Maryland on Saturday. Hankins had four points and two rebounds in eight minutes of that game.

Hankins, a 5-foot-8 guard, averaged 3.6 points in 11 games this season and 3.8 as a freshman. She scored a career-best 16 points during a Big Ten tournament victory against Minnesota last year and had 13 points and four steals in her college debut against Howard earlier that season.

She helped lead Lawrence North High School to the Class 4A Indiana Final Four in 2014.
