Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips on combating racism: We have failed, we will listen, we will act

Critics have assailed some teams and celebrities for their less-than pointed statements after the killing of George Floyd.

Tiger Woods' statement, for one, struck some as wishy-washy.

Contrast that with the "Letter to the Wildcats community" that Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips released Wednesday. He wrote that after listening to "horrifying, deeply personal experiences" from NU student-athletes, his department has "failed" to combat racism.

"Whether they've been small, quiet mistakes or large, loud missteps, we must be better at identifying and eliminating the frequent indignities which define white privilege," Phillips wrote.

He pledged to do better, writing: "Silence is unacceptable but words are worthless without action. ... We will not stand quietly on the sidelines."
