Feb. 05--A Northwest Side man became at least the 17th person this winter to die from cold-related causes in Cook County, the county medical examiner's office said Wednesday.
Geraldo Delgado, 55, was pronounced dead at 4:14 p.m. Tuesday at Community First Medical Center--formerly Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center--after being found in the 5500 block of West Diversey Avenue, according to the medical examiner's office.
Following an autopsy Wednesday, the office determined Delgado died from hypothermia due to cold exposure, with chronic alcoholism a contributing factor in his death.
Chicago Police News Affairs did not immediately have information on Delgado's death.
Delgado was the 17th person to die from cold-related causes this winter, although the investigation of another person's death has not yet been completed, according to medical examiner's office spokesman Frank Shuftan.
Before Delgado, the most recent person to die of cold-related causes was Edmund Lazuka of the 14900 block of Cleveland Avenue in Posen, who was pronounced dead on Jan. 27 at 8:39 a.m. at his home, according to the office.
Last winter -- during which Chicago had record-breaking low temperatures -- 32 cold-related deaths were counted from Oct. 24, 2013, through April 3, 2014, officials said.
