Northumbria University cancels St Patrick's Day event amid coronavirus fears

Northumbria University has cancelled its St Patrick's Day celebration due to growing concerns around coronavirus.

The event was due to take place at the Students' Union on Tuesday, March 17.

Officials said the decision had been taken to help reduce the risk of spreading Covid-19.

In a message shared on social media, they said: "The safety of our staff and students is the number one priority for the university and Students' Union.

"We are sorry to inform you that due to growing concerns around coronavirus Covid-19 we have jointly decided to cancel next week's St Patrick's Day celebration event planned at the  Students' Union on Tuesday 17 March.

"This decision has not been taken lightly, however is consistent with the approach of many organisations to limit large gatherings to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

"Please note that the Students' Union building will still be open on Tuesday 17th providing normal services.

"We know that for many of you this will be disappointing, and we hope that if you continue to celebrate elsewhere that you do so safely and responsibly."

The news comes after 12 coronavirus cases were confirmed in the North East by Public Health England.

As of Wednesday, the number of cases stood at five in Newcastle , three in North Tyneside, one in Sunderland, one in County Durham and two in Stockton-on-Tees.

In the UK as a whole, there are now around 460 confirmed cases. In all, more than 27,400 people have been tested. Eight people have died.
