Northumbria University cancels classroom teaching for students amid coronavirus outbreak

Classroom teaching will be suspended at Northumbria University as worries about the spread of coronavirus escalate.

On Thursday evening the Newcastle-based university announced that classroom teaching and learning activity will be cancelled from Monday.

Students will instead be given lessons and teaching materials online.

Other facilities including halls of residence, libraries and student services remain open.

The university also confirmed that the five positive cases of coronavirus in Newcastle have no known connection to the campus.

In an email sent to staff, seen by ChronicleLive, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Francis said: "We recognise that many of you rely on laboratories, workshops and other practical facilities, and we will make these available as long as is feasible.

"We are currently reviewing the options open to us on module assessments and examinations, as well as final year projects and that work will be ongoing over the course of the next week."

He added: "As I am sure you will appreciate this is not a decision we have taken lightly, but we believe it is in the best interests of you, your fellow students, our staff and the wider community.

"We want to continue to do our utmost to provide the best student experience possible in these difficult circumstances and will continue to work closely with the Students’ Union in this regard."

A statement on the university website said: "We are providing staff and students with daily updates on the latest guidance from Public Health England.

"This includes messaging across all our communication platforms on how to follow good sanitation practices, and we have provided additional hygiene provision at our campuses for students and staff.

"We are monitoring the situation closely and we will continue to provide advice and support as it becomes available to our university community."

The news came as Durham University said they would stop classroom teaching from Monday, March 16 until the end of term on March 20.

At the moment, Newcastle University remains open and is operating as normal and it says that working from home "should not be necessary".
