Northumbria Police officer facing disciplinary action after accessing confidential information

A policeman allegedly broke the rules by repeatedly accessing people's police files.

PC Stuart Dixon faces a misconduct hearing next week following a probe by Northumbria Police 's Professional Standards department.

Investigators claim PC Dixon "accessed confidential police information" over 30 times whilst on-duty, breaching people's confidentiality in the process.

It is alleged that he viewed the records of one person - referred to as Mr X - on nine different occasions.

The breaches are said to have occurred over a period of more than two years, between September 2016 and 2018.

The one-day misconduct hearing will take place on Tuesday at the force's Northern Communications Centre in Ponteland.

It will be staged in private.

If the allegations are proven, PC Dixon could potentially lose his job if the panel rules he committed gross misconduct.

The misuse of computer systems was identified as an issue by the force and anyone using such systems has to consent to an acceptable usage policy prior to being granted access.

The force website says: "[The] Professional Standards Department has carried out a number of investigations where police officers/police staff have allegedly accessed confidential and personal information on the Force Computer System without a policing purpose.

"Such action, if proven, would be a breach of the Standards of Professional Behaviour i.e. confidentiality."
