Northumbria Police investigating after yobs smash Tynemouth chocolatier shop window

Yobs smashed a Tynemouth shop's window in what customers have called a "despicable" act of vandalism.

Northumbria Police are investigating Friday night's attack on the Gareth James Chocolatier store, on Front Street.

A Facebook post from the shop, shared over 1,000 times, stated: "So, we understand that lockdown leaves not much for people to do to occupy themselves with at the moment, but kicking in a window for fun, really??"

Officers are probing CCTV footage, which shows a group of youngsters sprinting away from the shop shortly after 8pm.

Mr James, who has had the business for over a decade, declined to comment further when approached by ChronicleLive.

A post on the shop's Facebook page states: "We believe that we have identified all four people, and have passed names and a mass of evidence to the police."

The post then thanked customers for sharing the appeal.

However there has been disgust at the "mindless" act against a business during the current Covid-19 pandemic.

One outraged customer branded the culprits the "scum of the Earth", while another added: "What a despicable thing to do - no respect for other people's properties. I hope they get caught."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson confirmed that several names had been passed to the force, and were being investigated.

They added: “Shortly before 9.55pm on February 19 we received a report of a broken window at Gareth James Chocolatier, Front Street, Tynemouth.

“CCTV has been reviewed and enquiries are on-going into the incident.”
