And youngsters looking for something to do on the last days of their Christmas holiday were quick to take advantage of the wintery weather with the promise of sledging and snowball fights enticing them outdoors.

And the smile on the face of nine-year-old Sonny Sparke as he played in the snow in Allendale said it all.

But it's not all fun and games.

Today the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for the North East, in place from 6pm today until 11am on tomorrow.

It covers all areas of the region including Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, County Durham and Sunderland.

The first snow of the year fell yesterday and sleet and rain overnight has caused many roads in the area to become icy.

Further snowfall could occur on high ground tonight as temperatures continue to plummet.

The warning says: "Icy patches are expected to develop, especially on untreated surfaces, where snow has been melting on Sunday and where frequent showers occur through the night.

"Further hill snow is also possible above 200-300m, though less extensively than last night."
