Northumberland village named one of the coolest postcodes to move to in 2022

Not content with being one of the UK's top holiday destinations for 2022, Beadnell has scooped another accolade after being named one of the coolest postcodes to move to this year.

That's according to newspaper The Times, which announced its list of the coolest postcodes to move to in the UK this week.

The seaside village was highlighted for its tiny population, stargazing opportunities, and the nearby Farne Islands.

Jen Hall, who has lived in Beadnell her whole life, said: "We do have a marvellous community. The 27 percent of permanent residents are older than the average age in Northumberland but they are very active so we have a lovely community spirit.

However, before you head over to Rightmove or Zoopla, Jen was keen to stress that Beadnell is not without drawbacks. In a village where a high percentage of the homes are second homes or holiday lets, residents are 'fighting to retain' its character.

Jen also says that due to the village being a long way from a bus route and a lack of university in the county, many young people move away from the village and the already small population has a higher than average amount of retirees - meaning that there's no-one to fill jobs in tourism and care.

She continued: "Since 1991, half the population has moved away. We're down to one shop, we have a mobile post office, and we've lost hotels and pubs. We're down to one of each. We've lost farms which have been turned into accommodation.

"We're struggling like a lot of other villages around England."

The full recommendation in The Times, which recommended Beadnell 'for grown-up off-gridders' said: "With its sprawling landscapes and some of the lowest light-pollution levels in the UK, Northumberland is where people go to disappear in style. And there's nowhere better than Beadnell, a tiny coastal village with a population of less than 500.

"During low season it's a ghost town in the best possible way: deserted beaches, no people and barely any phone reception. If that's not off-grid enough, sail to the nearby Farne Islands: besides the 43,000 breeding puffins, you'll have the place to yourself."

The Times recommended trying a locally-distilled G and T at The Craster Arms, which was voted the best pub in Northumberland at 2021's National Pub and Bar Awards and also showed off Northumberland's credentials for astrotourism.

It continued: "Visit during midwinter, when you're most likely to spot the aurora borealis - Northumberland is also one of the best places in the UK to stargaze."
