Northumberland Street blaze tackled by firefighters

Firefighters have tackled a blaze at a block of flats in Belfast.

The fire is thought to have started in the basement of Esther Patterson Court on Northumberland Street off the Shankill Road and residents were evacuated.

One told Belfast Live: “It seemed to have started from underneath the building and you can see some of the lights hanging down underground.

“We were all told to get out and some of the shops nearby were closed.”

Firefighters and police remain at the scene, though the fire has been brought under control.

Hundreds of new build houses at risk of fire according to BBC investigation

DUP Councillor Nicola Verner told Belfast Live: “I’m very concerned that residents and business owners have been affected by the blaze.

“I’m thankful that no one was hurt and praise the great work of the fire service who have brought it under control.

“Hopefully the cause of the fire can be identified and measures taken to avoid any further risk.”
