Northumberland school given green light for new cycle track

A Northumberland school has been given the green light for a new cycle track, to encourage youngsters to stay active.

A planning application for the multi-use track, within the grounds of Mowbray Primary School in Stakeford, was unanimously approved at Monday's (June 10) Castle Morpeth Local Area Council meeting.

The bid was not a controversial one, but had to be decided by councillors as it is a development by the local authority itself.

The scheme had originally attracted an objection from Sport England, which was concerned about the loss of playing fields, however, further information, confirming that the proposals only marginally encroach onto the usable pitch area, led the body to drop its opposition.

Planning officer Jon Sharp said: "It's on marginal land which is quite damp and boggy and there's ample room for the playing fields.

"It will improve access to the area where the school currently runs its Forest School activities as well."

The report to councillors explained that the track is intended to provide a location to encourage walking and cycling among pupils as part of the school day.

It would also provide a dedicated space for initiatives such as the Daily Mile and after-school club provision.

The track, which would be accessed from the existing Stakeford Lane entrance, would be for school use only.
