Northumberland's England football star Lucy Bronze set for Champions League final

Northumberland's England star Lucy Bronze is set to line up in a Champions League final this evening.

Bronze, who grew up in Alnwick and Lindisfarne, plays for French side Lyon, who are overwhelming favourites to beat Barcelona in today's UEFA Women's Champions League Final.

Former Sunderland, Liverpool and Everton defender Bronze left Manchester City two years ago, with her eyes set on winning Champions Leagues.

The 2018 BBC Women's Fooballer of the Year already has one Champions League title to her name. She lifted the trophy in Kiev last year, after her side beat Wolfsburg 4-1.

Lyon have won the last three Women's Champions Leagues, and have reached the final eight times in the past 10 years.

Barcelona's women's team are appearing in their first Champions League final, which kicks off at 5pm in Budapest on Saturday, May 18.

Speaking to The Telegraph , Bronze said she has settled into life in France,  and improved as a player since making the switch.

Bronze said: "It was hard at first, I didn’t speak much French, but I’ve moved abroad before to play football and I’ve not regretted it for a second. The league in England is getting stronger but Lyon are the best club in Europe and the perfect environment for me."

But there won't be a holiday for Bronze after tonight's final.

Next month she is set to line up for England in the Women's World Cup. The final is in her new home city of Lyon.
