Northumberland market traders furious as they can't reopen despite easing of lockdown rules

Market traders in Northumberland say they are not being allowed to reopen their stalls despite the Government announcing an easing of lockdown restrictions.

Open air markets were given the go-ahead to reopen in England from Monday, with Covid-19 safety measures in place.

However some traders is Northumberland say they are not being allowed to operate in markets including Blyth, Ashington and Morpeth.

Gary Skinner, who sells garden ornaments, says he has been trading from Blyth Market for around two years.

But while some stalls, selling food, pet food and plants, have been operating, others have not been able to set up shop again as yet.

Mr Skinner, 59, from Morpeth, said: "The Government has allowed markets to open now but Northumberland County Council is not allowing us back on.

"There are some stalls, selling things like food, pet food and plants, but others are not allowed to trade yet.

"There is no reason why we can't open as well. We can run our stalls with social-distancing rules in place like the others.

"This is having an effect on our livelihoods. Quite a few traders have been affected by this."

A Northumberland County Council spokesman said: "While a number of traders who were selling essential items continued to operate through the lockdown period , the safety of everyone remains our top priority.

"The issue remains that marketholders must be able to operate safely within the current marketplace areas and be able to maintain social distancing, both between each other and customers.

"We are reviewing the layout of each council operated market and developing plans so that when we do fully reopen markets in the future, traders and their customers can maintain effective social distancing."
