Northumberland has England's highest rate of vaccinated young people

Northumberland has a higher proportion of 18 to 24-year-olds who have had at least one Covid-19 vaccine than anywhere else in the country.

Based on the latest Government and NHS data, 79.7% of young people in the county have had their first jab.

That equates to almost 18,000 people.

The county also ranks second nationally for the percentage of people in that age group who have had both jabs - behind North Somerset.

As of September 14, 64.6% of 18 to 24 year olds in the area had received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

Richard Hay, head of planning and operations and Northumberland CCG, said the county's young people were "a credit to their county".

He added: "We are immensely proud of the responsibility and compassion displayed by our young people in the county for coming forward, doing their bit and getting these life-saving vaccines to protect themselves and their communities."

One of those young people, Morpeth's Jake Waugh, explained why he had been keen to get jabbed.

He said: "I feel really privileged to be offered the Covid-19 vaccine. I play guitar in a local band, so it's been really good to get back to playing live and feeling the atmosphere of the crowd again."

He added that it had "put his mind at ease" to know he was protecting his friends and family, too.

Northumberland is also seeing high numbers of those aged 16 or 17 coming forward for a jab.

Since that cohort were added to the vaccine rollout on August 15, 64.4% of them had come forward for a jab.

Elsewhere in the region the vaccine rollout continues apace.

North Tyneside has the 12th highest proportion of double-jabbed 18 to 24-year-olds, with 60.4%.

In Sunderland the equivalent figure is 55%, in County Durham it is 52.5%, and almost half of young people in South Tyneside are also vaccinated, with 49.7%.

In Darlington 49% of the age group are protected, compared to 48.8% in Gateshead and 46.2% in Newcastle - which reflects the wider difficulties bigger cities are having with encouraging vaccine take-up.
