Northumberland Estates 'keen' to invest in massive Teesside scheme

The business wing of the Duke of Northumberland has said it is “very keen” to invest in a major industrial scheme on Teesside.

The Northumberland Estates - which has land interests throughout the North East and further afield - has desccribed the Teesworks and freeport plans on Teesside “phenomenally exciting”.

Teesworks is described as “the UK’s largest and most connected industrial zone”, with hopes that thousands of jobs will be created there in low-carbon industries.

Teesside was also one of eight areas around England to be granted freeport status in March’s Budget, giving the area the potential to attract major employers to the area.

Rory Wilson, CEO at Northumberland Estates, said: “We are extremely impressed by what’s been achieved, with both local and national government acting as a catalyst in the regeneration of Teesside.

“We are very keen to be an investor when appropriate. We see Teesside as an area that is regenerating, and being very much a North East centric business, we have always invested in the region.

“There is a lot of empty land, the mayor and the local authority has acted as an amazing catalyst to prepare everything for a lot of regeneration and a huge amount of jobs, which is great.”

The Northumberland Estates recently received planning permission for an ‘Amazon-sized’ warehouse at Wynyard, on Teesside, which could potentially create hundreds of jobs. The company bought a £10m stake in the Wynard development in 2016.
