Northumberland County Council will spend £1.5 million to modernise aging Prudhoe Waterworld leisure centre

Prudhoe's Waterworld Leisure Centre is set to receive some much-needed TLC to bring it into the 21st century.

Northumberland County Council's cabinet has agreed to fund a £1.5 million improvement scheme to modernise the site, which first opened in 1990.

The leisure centre, which houses a pool complete with slide and wave machines as well as a gym and fitness studio, also received a £650,000 refurbishment in 2016 - but the council felt it was time to modernise once again.

Speaking at Tuesday's meeting of the council's cabinet, council leader Glen Sanderson said: "We feel that Prudhoe Waterworld needs some investment and some improvement.

"I have been to see Waterworld and I agree that there is definitely a need for some new maintenance in certain areas there, so I'm very pleased that we have added this."

Coun Sanderson said Conservative councillor and fellow cabinet member, Coun Gordon Stewart, had frequently raised the issue with him.

Speaking at the meeting, Coun Stewart said: "This is massive news for Prudhoe. I accept it is not the first time an administration has invested such a large amount of resources in Prudhoe, but the last one was probably in 1120 when the Umfravilles family built Prudhoe Castle.

"It is a time when membership in Active Northumberland (the company that runs the council's leisure services) is at record heights, and we see neighbouring authorities closing down their leisure centres and facilities.

"We're spending money to make it Waterworld fit for the future. It is fit for purpose now, it has got a lot of life in it, but we need to modernise.

"Such investment shows that Prudhoe matters and people can be proud of Prudhoe - but I will not shut up, I will be asking for more money for Prudhoe."

Speaking after the meeting, Hexham MP Guy Opperman welcomed the news. The Conservative MP said he had also been involved in the campaign for the investment.

He said: "I am delighted that the Conservative-run Administration has allocated this vital funding to Waterworld. This is excellent news for Prudhoe - it will help boost tourism and give facilities that local people can be proud of."
