Northern unveils new key worker timetable on all Yorkshire routes

Northern has revealed its new, slimmed-down timetable as the coronavirus pandemic continues to have a major impact on the travel industry.

Prime minister Boris Johnson reiterated to the country on Monday, March 23, that people should only go to work if absolutely necessary and anyone who can do their job from home is strongly advised to do so.

The rail franchise - which was taken back into public ownership at the start of this month - has stripped back its services to comply with the new guidelines.

A message says that while Northern aims to offer "the best possible rail service during this difficult time, it is simply not possible to operate our usual timetable".

The new timetables have been published online and a number of routes have seen services significantly reduced, while Sunday services will continue to run as normal.

A message on the Northern website says: "The aim is to deliver services on key routes for those identified as key workers – ensuring they can get where they need to be to provide help and assistance to all in the region.

"Everyone at Northern is working to provide the best possible rail service during this difficult time, but it is simply not possible to operate our usual timetable.

"Where we are not able to run trains we will seek to provide rail replacement road transport.

"Though we continue to run services, the Government is advising that, if possible, people should avoid non-essential public transport use and try to avoid rush hour, varying usual travel times to prevent crowding and if possible, work from home.

"We will continue to do all we can and hope you will also continue to play your part when travelling on Northern services."
