Northern Territory quarantine breaches mount, angering authorities

Police have now issued 110 fines for coronavirus breaches in the NT.

Northern Territory Police say people "aren't getting the message" about coronavirus risks after another series of "utterly unacceptable" quarantine breaches.

Police slapped seven people with $1,106 fines after they failed to self-quarantine or follow exemption conditions.

The fines come after the Northern Territory on Thursday recorded its first locally diagnosed coronavirus case since April 6.

The breaches included two people who were moved into a hotel in Nhulunbuy to complete quarantine after they failed to do so in the remote community of Gapuwiyak in north-east Arnhem Land.

Acting Commander Shaun Gill said there was "no excuse" for people not to follow health orders.

"The Territory now has a new case of COVID-19 so it's utterly unacceptable that the selfish actions of a few expose the public to potential danger," he said.

A 43-year-old woman arrived in the Northern Territory on Tuesday and flew to Gapuwiyak to undertake quarantine, against the direction of health authorities, police said.

Police found she was in a place unsuitable for quarantine and was not complying with quarantine requirements.

A 25-year-old man arrived in Darwin on Monday and was found "trading at a makeshift store" in Gapuwiyak on Wednesday.

A 47-year-old man who travelled from Victoria to work in Pine Creek was fined after he was found to be in breach of his quarantine exemption conditions.

Four other fines were issued to people who were absent from their nominated quarantine address upon compliance checks.

"If you are in quarantine, you must abide by the CHO directions," Mr Gill said.

"No excuse is acceptable."

Police and health officers have conducted 21,831 compliance checks and issued 110 fines.
