A police investigation is underway after a 32-year-old man was found dead on the Northern Territory's Tiwi Islands.

NT Police issued a statement on Thursday afternoon saying a crime scene was in place at a home in Wurrumiyanga, the largest community on Bathurst Island.

They said a relative found the man's body at the front of his resident at around 1.30pm.

No details have been released about the cause of the man's death.

Police said a crime scene had been established. Detectives and crime scene investigators travelled to the island from Darwin this afternoon.

Police are urging the public to call 131 444 to report any relevant information.
