Northern Stage announces Christmas show and Newcastle audiences are in for a treat

Northern Stage has announced its Christmas show and families can expect a magical re-telling of classic favourite The Snow Queen.

Just as we hurtle headlong into summer, the Newcastle theatre is inviting us to immerse ourselves in wintry thoughts of a fairytale world of snow and ice as first tickets go on sale this week for the festive treat.

The new Northern Stage adaptation, which will run from November 30 until January 4, will see the famous Hans Christian Andersen story brought to stage life by writer Laura Lindow and the team behind former theatre favourites A Christmas Carol; James and the Giant Peach and Alice in Wonderland.

The show is one of a number of highlights being revealed as the theatre announces its upcoming autumn season and another biggie will be the stage premiere of Matt Haig's number one bestseller Reasons to Stay Alive.

The adaptation of the author's account of his own struggle to overcome major depression will stop off at the theatre from October 15-19 from its national tour.

Also on its programme will be The Hound of the Baskervilles, starring rising talents from the theatre's development programme NORTH in the adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic gothic tale about Sherlock Holmes running from September 11-12.

And there will be a takeover of Byker Community Centre in Newcastle by theatre company Common Wealth from October 16-26 which, in a co-production with the theatre, will involve locals in its arms trade-theme show I Have Met the Enemy (and the enemy is us) starring Palestinian actor Mo’min Swaitat and former British Soldier Alex Eley.

Another co-production, this time involving several theatres, will be Pride and Prejudice: a show described as being an adaptation like no other.

Tickets for the new season will go on sale from this week, with priority booking for theatre members opening on May 9 to be followed by tickets going on general sale on May 23.
