A Great Ancoats Street takeaway could be under threat after plans were unveiled to build an office block on the site.
Soller Group, acting on behalf of Soller Nine, have revealed the plans via Avison Young, a property firm. Initial images from the company show a 15-storey office building being constructed where the Golden Tandoori takeaway is.
The modern-looking offices will be one element in the scheme, which will retain some of the original facades and footprint of existing buildings. That includes the Bem Brasil restaurant, on the corner of Great Ancoats Street and Lever Street.

“The site is located within Manchester’s vibrant Northern Quarter situated on the corner where Lever Street and Great Ancoats Street meet,” a leaflet from Avison Young, released last week, said. “The proposed heritage-led scheme seeks to transform the existing site into a new vibrant office development with emerging options being approximately 3-15 storeys in height.
“A contemporary new building is proposed to be set back from Lever Street to respect the streetscape with 40 percent of the original facades and 21 percent of original footprints retained. A new building of appropriate scale will be set back from Lever Street to respect the streetscape, providing a contemporary backdrop to the retained buildings.”
Developers say that 800 jobs will be created by the work, and roughly £60 million in gross added value to the city annually.
After launching a consultation on the plans, Nick Treadaway, CEO of Soller Group, says initial feedback has been positive. “We were extremely encouraged by the feedback received at our consultation last week and from the comments left via our consultation website," he told the MEN .
"We are now developing our plans, taking on board the opinions of the general public and will continue to work towards a spring 2023 planning application.”
