Northern Quarter street shut following building fire

A Northern Quarter street is shut tonight following a building fire.

The blaze broke out in Hilton Street, off Stevenson Square, on Wednesday evening.

Transport bosses have warned drivers to avoid the area, with the fire service and police still at the scene.

Transport for Greater Manchester said: "Due to a nearby building fire, Hilton Street (City Centre) is currently closed in both directions between Oldham Street and Stevenson Square."

Pictures sent into the Manchester Evening News show at least three fire engines at the scene.

GMP have published about the incident in a tweet from their city centre account.

They said: "Keeping our colleagues from the fire service safe in the Northern Quarter."
