Northern Quarter's Malaysian restaurant closes for good

The Northern Quarter's landmark Malaysian restaurant has announced its permanent closure.

There has been a Malaysian restaurant on Oldham Street since 2006, when Ning first opened its doors.

That restaurant was repossessed in 2017, months after co-founder Norman Musa was banned from running a business for five years after employing illegal workers.

But its award-winning team soon regrouped and relaunched the restaurant as Penang, keeping the much-loved decor and authentic Malaysian food of its predecessor.

Sadly, Penang has now confirmed its permanent closure, marking the end of an era for the Northern Quarter.

The restaurant was famed for its authentic dishes, especially its traditional roti canai, a buttery flatbread served with a portion of curry.

They posted news of the closure last month, writing: "Thank you for all your support, especially during the pandemic.

"We will closing the doors for the restaurant and taking a little break."

Hinting of a new project in the pipeline, they added: "We will miss you but this isn't going to be the end of us..... to be continued!"

On the restaurant's last day, a photograph of the Penang staff was shared with the caption: "Our very last shift yesterday!!

"Thank you to these amazing people for all their hard work even till the very last day! It has been a pleasure working with you.

"Also a big thank you to everyone who visited us this week and making it the best week ever, we will miss you all dearly. Hopefully we will be able to see all your lovely faces again, love from all at Penang "

People have been bombarding the restaurant's social media pages with messages of support, including one that read: "Just want to say thank you for the delicious food and warm hospitality. I'll be miss the resto and the people! Best of luck for your future adventure!"

Another person lamented: "This is just awful news. I hope you come back bigger and stronger. Trips to Manchester won’t be the same."
