Northern Quarter restaurant serves up a 'Reggae Roast' with jerk chicken and spicy gravy

A Northern Quarter restaurant is giving guests a taste of the Caribbean with their twist on the classic Sunday lunch.

Pull Up Cafe Bar’s goal is, according to their Instagram, to serve ‘exciting authentic Caribbean food and drinks, great music and art, and most of all just good vibes and community spirit.’

Their food is a fusion of African, European, East Indian and Arabic cuisines, with plenty of spices and flavours, and has made a name for itself on Manchester’s packed restaurant scene, scoring an overall 4.5 out 5 stars on TripAdvisor with reviewers praising their generous portion sizes and ‘well-seasoned’ dishes.

They’ve become well known for their Anglo-Caribbean interpretation of a classic roast dinner, the ‘Reggae Roast’.

It is available on Sundays only, and includes lemon and thyme roast jerk chicken, carrot, plantain, rice, peas, mac n’ cheese and spicy gravy.

Guests can swap chicken for lamb chops or steaks for £6 extra and they also offer a vegetarian alternative, dubbed ‘the Rasta Roast’ which includes roast pumpkin with a pepper, spring onions and olive mix with roast carrot, sweet potato wedges, fried plantain, rice, peas, all smothered in vegetable gravy.

Food can be washed down with a selection of beers, wines or cocktails including pina coladas, mojitos and other classic offerings.

One reviewer said: “Myself and my partner visited Pull Up this weekend and have nothing but good things to say. My partner loves Caribbean food and eats it constantly so the food had a lot of competition however we were both very impressed.

“I personally don’t like a lot of spice in my food so I opted for the Jerk Chicken which only had one pepper next to it on the menu, indicating low spice level. It was delicious!

“My partner had ‘The Hench Box’ which included two mains.. For a big eater like my partner this was a perfect portion and a great idea from Pull Up!”

Another commented: “The food was out of this world for flavour! We had curry goat, peppered steak, jerk chicken and chops. Everything was cooked to perfection, meat was succulent and melt-in-the-mouth, and the flavours were insanely good.

“The rice and peas and sides were all delicious too, and the portion sizes were good. We had the pitchers, which were fun to share, plus the ginger mojito was delicious. We had a couple of other cocktails too, all of which were fantastic too.

“We will definitely be back, we had a gorgeous time, and enjoyed every single bite and sip!”

Pull Up Cafe Bar is open between 5pm-10pm Thursday to Sunday, and is located at 14-16 Swan Street, Manchester M4 5JN. For more information follow their website here , and Instagram here.
