Northern issue update on flash sale of super cheap 10p train tickets

Northern have lifted the lid on just how mad the scramble for 10p tickets was during this month's flash sale.

Customers picked up bargains on trains across the country between January 13 to February 14, and February 24 to February 29, with some adult tickets costing just 10p. Kids could travel for even less, with child tickets costing 5p.

It was initially thought that 180,000 tickets would be available in the mega sale, which launched on Tuesday, January 7, but in actual fact the total number of tickets sold was closer to 250,000.

Although the huge demand caused glitches on the Northern website, the sale proved incredibly popular and all the 10p advance purchase tickets were snapped up within 72 hours.

The January event followed a similarly popular flash sale in August last year.

Mark Powles, commercial director at Northern Rail, said: "After Christmas and New Year we wanted to give our customers a little lift to welcome the 2020s and brought back our popular 10p tickets.

"Tens of thousands of tickets were available on our most popular routes and, with children’s tickets costing just 5p, there is no better time to explore the north of England – at a fraction of the usual cost.

"Our website had more than one million visits during the sale and we’re delighted that so many people will be able to benefit from great value travel over the next couple of months."

The government has recently announced plans to strip Northern Rail of its franchise after months of delays and cancellations to services across Yorkshire and beyond.

In a statement issued last week, transport secretary Grant Shapps MP said: "We are taking action to make sure that performance improves."
