Northern Irish Schooldays BBC documentary shares archive footage from NI's past

A new BBC documentary is set to take a look back in time at the lives of school students in their formative days in the classroom.

Packed with nostalgia, Northern Irish Schooldays delves into unmissable archive footage, with present and former pupils reminiscing about their school lives.

Sharing details about the documentary, the BBC said: "Teaching methods may have changed, but from first day nerves to the excitement of the school disco and sports day competitions, these classmates - old and new - share many experiences."

The documentary follows the trajectories of Cliodhna and her father Arthur who attended the same primary and secondary schools in Carrickmore, Co Tyrone. Arthur recalls being slapped with a sally rod back in the 1950s, while Cliodhna looks back on home videos and her performance in the school concert.

Elsewhere dinner ladies Frankie and Suzanne discuss how lunch time offerings have improved from their school days, while current students Kori and Grace examine old footage and can’t imagine a time when technology wasn’t at the forefront of classroom teaching.

James and Jona, school boarders at Campbell College in Belfast, recall how they spent more time together than with their families, and Clare and Richard reminisce about their pioneering steps into integrated education at the newly created Lagan College in 1981.

And, in the clip above, students of Lagan College reminisce about the momentous time when the integrated school first opened.

Packed with nostalgia, Northern Irish Schooldays gives a unique insight into school life in Northern Ireland.

Northern Irish Schooldays will be broadcast on BBC One Northern Ireland on Sunday, September 5, at 8pm. It is made by Afro-Mic Productions for BBC Northern Ireland.
